My Family History
My mom’s grandfather worked in a Gary, Indiana steel mill, and other members of his family migrated to Indiana. Now, my mom’s side of the family are majority nurses in the health field. My mom came to the University of Northern Iowa to go to college.
Living in Iowa
Being a child that grows up in Iowa has both its perks and its challenges. It’s a nice, generally pretty quiet, and safe place to grow up. But sometimes the options for our futures feel limited, small, and unattainable because of the environments we were surrounded in and stereotypes that some people try to shove us into. Cultural and ethnic diversity is low, making it difficult for kids in those different communities, especially African American communities, to sometimes see themselves outside of the typical roles that our media portrays them as.
My Dreams
I’m interested in science and have a high aptitude for math. But I also am passionate about music, fashion, and skateboarding. I want to be an engineer. I also want to travel to places like Canada for its natural beauty and kind people, and to France to attend fashion week and explore new clothing styles. I aspire to have the positivity, calmness, and respectfulness of pro skateboarder John Hill.
A Teacher Who Changed My Life
My third grade teacher, Mrs. Harrelson, was cool. When I was in third grade, she told my parents I was a brilliant student and recommended that I accelerate up a year.
My Favorite Thing
It’s not that pencil specifically. It’s the idea of a pencil. When pencils were originally created they needed to have all of the parts shipped from different parts of the world, so in my eyes a pencil means a community. It’s just so great to imagine something that took so much to create create creations spanning from drawings, poems, and even ideas.
What #DIVERSITYISOURSTRENGTH means to me
Diversity is a key to having an opinion. Judges have to have diverse juries for proper verdicts, and we all gotta have a widespread set of opinions to get a fair outlook.
