My Family History
My family has always lived in Humboldt, Iowa. We are descendants of German and Irish immigrants.
My Dreams
I am good at: amateur baking and teaching
I want to be: a college professor that works with preservice and in-service teachers to critique systems within arts education that choose to continuously marginalize students through upholding whiteness.
A Teacher Who Changed My Life
Dr. Daniel Spikes, Education Administration/Leadership and Social Justice, Iowa State University
There are many teachers throughout my K-12 experiences, but it was not until my first class in my doctoral program that I learned that my “prescription” needed to change to see the world for its current reality and how systems of oppression can work. Dr. Spikes was one of my first professors in the program, and though he has left Iowa State, we still talk to discuss education for social justice.
My Favorite Thing
My wedding guest sign in, thumbprints of guests as balloons from the Disney movie Up! This was a first public same-sex wedding for a local institution. My husband and I were joined by a select number of family members and friends, however some chose to remain away from religious reasons. This object is proudly displayed in our house between the first letter of each last name.
What #DIVERSITYISOURSTRENGTH means to me
Diversity is our strength means that I recognize the lens that I use to view the world. That lens is changing, especially through the specific nuances to the word “diversity.” Diversity celebrates racial, gender/sexual orientation, and cultural diversity in its vivid colors. This hashtag also calls for a greater strength, one of vulnerability for white folks, as we work to dismantle systems of oppression through action as accomplices within our community.
